Google Adwords - The How To Guide

Here at breakfrom, we offer to run almost any advertising campaign, but we find that the most popular request by far is for us to manage a companies Google Adwords campaign. Google Adwords is responsible for thousands of sites increasing not just traffic but more importantly, business. When used correctly it can bring in inexpensive, high quality traffic to a website - by putting you on the first page of the google search results for your selected keywords.

In this article we will examine:

  • What exactly Google Adwords is
  • Whether or not it will benefit your business
  • What services breakfrom provide in relation to it and your website

What is Google Adwords?

Google Adwords is a form of advertising where the promoter only pays for an advert once he receives a visit from it. This is known as cost-per-click (or cost-per-impression) advertising. You can set a budget or a limit to the amount of people able to click on your adverts so you never spend more than you can afford. It can also be turned off easily and at anytime. As such it has clear advantages over static adverts that are paid for upfront and from which you may receive no visits at all. In collaboration with Google Statistics it is possible to almost continually refine and optimise aspects of Adwords to make it more effective for a business. If you are unsure what these Adwords look like or where they are displayed go to www.google.com and type in “musical instruments”. The results displayed in boxes to the side of the regular 1-10 list and also those above the list are the Adwords adverts. You will notice they relate to your search term, just as the person who is advertising them intended. If you now refresh the page a different set of adverts will appear that still relate to your search query – this is due to a rotation system used by google because of the vast number of adverts they have to display.

To understand why Google Adwords is such an excellent promotion tool let us look at an example of it benefiting an ecommerce website. To do this we will take a look at an invented company called Petdelights.com – a provider of pet foods and accessories run by an English man named Richard.

Example: Petdelights.com – Why choose Google Adwords?

Richard has recently set up a pet supplies website. It looks good and he has a decent shopping cart, but the problem is he is receiving very few visits to his website and as such he is selling few products. He is confident that if people that wanted to buy pet accessories visited his website they would purchase goods from it, due to the low prices and friendly page design. However when he types in “pet supplies” to google he does not find his site till page 14. He contacts breakfrom and tells us about his problems. We notice that his website is not optimised for search engines and is ranked low because of both this and it being a relatively new site. We offer to improve his ranking but inform him that it will take time. He accepts this but unfortunately he already has costs to cover and as such needs to start selling now. We recommend a Google Adwords campaign.

Why would we recommend Google Adwords to Richard?

Richard does not have thousands of pounds to spend on advertising his website with the uncertainty of whether anybody will even click on to his site. Google Adwords means he pays nothing for advertising until a person clicks to visit his site, in which case an agreed price will be taken from Richards account. He also believes that people will buy products, usually more than one, if they visit his site. He says he has high sales conversion figures for the visitors up to now. That information makes Google Adwords an excellent choice for him.

With permission from Richard we set up a £30 a day budget. We decide with him what selection of keywords are likely to bring him the right visitors. From this he receives around 35 extra customers a day, and an average around four sales a day. For him this easily covers the cost of the Google Adwords and keeps his business profitable until the search engines organically list his site highly enough to bring in enough business alone. Many of these customers, and some that visited through his adverts will come back to his site in the future to make a repeat/new purchase.

Whether or not it will benefit your business

We believe for nearly any company after extra traffic/sales it is at least worth trying Google Adwords. Remember, it can be made to work around your budget and can be stopped at anytime.
The two main exceptions to using Adwords would be:

No budget to support Adwords
Sales earning less money than the cost of an advert.

In the second case it may still be worth it as there is a good chance of the buyer coming back to purchase from your site in the future - for free, and this may also result in growth to your user base from word of mouth. For any advice please contact us.
