R.I.P The Internet - 1989-2008. Disconnected Mercilessly by The Grid.

It is called The Grid and it will connect up every computer in the world, creating the most powerful and intelligent supercomputer ever seen. It will be able to send data to computers ten thousand times faster than the average broadband connection can and it will be capable of downloading a full film a continent away in 1-5 seconds. It is the end of the Internet as we know it. So what is The Grid and why does it sound so worryingly like The Matrix? More importantly is there a chance it will take over the world and enslave all of humanity?

Internet Full: Please look for room elsewhere (The Future of the Web)

Think of those adverts that warn about the risk of heart attacks. The ones that show a cut through of a persons veins and arteries transporting blood around the body. Then they show a build up of fat deposits that clog up the veins, stop the flow of blood and are eventually responsible for a heart attack. Well that is what we are doing to the internet, apparently. By 2011 it will have come to a virtual standstill or at best it will be like we are all on 56k modems (again).

The new technologies about to change the way we live

5. Space Tourism

What is it?

It’s all in the name. The idea is for ordinary people (as opposed to astronauts) to be able to take a trip into space for a reasonable price. We will all be able to experience zero gravity without having to take a trip on the “vomit express” - as used on Apollo 13’s zero gravity scenes.
For now, trips will only be an option for the super-rich, or celebrities such as William Shatner (who deserves to go more than Shatner?). That is because trips cost $200,000 and deposits start from $20,000 (Virgin Galactic prices). I’m not great with heights, and personally would only consider it if I had just a year left to live.
